Knowing your vehicle’s overall travelling height (OTH) is a legal requirement and a critical road safety measure. Since 1st October 1997, the law has required that HGV height must be indicated inside the cab if the overall travelling height of the vehicle or trailer exceeds three metres. This Lloyd Morgan Group height conversion chart sticker gives drivers an instant, at-a-glance reference, converting imperial measurements to metric without the need for mental arithmetic or a separate tool.
Designed specifically for HGV, LGV, van, and commercial vehicle cabs, the sticker covers heights from 10ft / 3.05m up to 20ft 11″ / 6.38m. Using it is straightforward: find your feet measurement across the top, then your inches down the side, and the corresponding metric figure is right where they meet. For example, 17ft 5″ equals 5.31m.
All metric figures have been rounded up where any decimal readings are present, ensuring the safer, higher reading is always displayed. Drivers should always verify their vehicle height where tolerances are close, particularly as vehicle height can rise automatically depending on load and suspension state.
Bridge strikes are costly, dangerous and disruptive for operators and other road users. Network Rail figures show that from 1 April 2023 to 31 March 2024, there were 1,532 reported bridge strikes involving HGVs across the UK railway network, roughly one every six hours. A visible, clearly printed height conversion reference in the cab is one of the simplest and most effective steps an operator can take to reduce this risk.
